Hey resident of Detroit

This is a note from Robin, owner at Fawn River Doodles.

Here’s what makes Detroit (and the surrounding areas) special to us

Detroit is filled with beautiful parks and outdoor activities to enjoy with your puppy but there’s also a lot indoor spaces and events that are dog-friendly for the winter months.

Things to do with your puppy

  • Take your pup to a Tigers baseball game (the event is called Bark at the Park and there are usually 3 games per year)
  • Take your dog for a swim at the Rolling Hills Water Park in Ypsilanti on Doggy Dip (usually the last day of the season) “This is a blast!!! They sort it by dog size and they are running crazy.”
  • Hike trails in Willow Metropark in New Boston
  • Enjoy Bark on Biddle, a “3-day dog festival” in Wyandotte, MI

Our first puppy goes to Detroit

Here’s Erin B’s story. She didn’t know it at the time but her puppy was the first one to go to Detroit.

Here’s her story:

In August 2015, we were living with our 16 year old Jack Russell who was deaf and blind. We’d lost the other Jack Russell just a few years prior.

Our friends posted on Facebook that while driving through Indiana on the way back to Michigan they got a Labradoodle puppy after reading an ad on Hoobly.

I saw the post and immediately contacted our friend to inquire where they got the cute black pup. It was pretty late at night but I sent a text to the breeder and they responded right away.

That’s when our relationship with Robin and Trina began.

Shortly after that, we drove there and picked out the best dog we’ve ever had, named Harper. About a year and a half later, six months after losing our Jack Russell, we adopted Moxie, a goofy white and apricot colored parti-labradoodle from them too!

Finally, in the fall of 2018, my husband caved and allowed one more dog into the fold. We adopted Whiskey, a darling medium size bernedoodle from Fawn River.

These pups have been wonderful and even better is our friendship with Robin and Trina nine years later.

We believed strongly in the business ethic and integrity of Robin and Trina of Fawn River Doodles, we recommended them to several friends!

We are grateful for the people we’ve been able to meet since we started breeding puppies and the lasting relationships that have come out of that.

Anyway, thanks for visiting us online. If you have any questions, please call us or send us a message.

~ Robin

  • Robin called FIVE minutes later

Where to begin?! Very long story short we had a puppy from someone fall through, after some google searching, found Fawn River. I left my info on their website, thinking I’d hear from them a few days later, low and behold Robin called him FIVE minutes later ???? it took me a few moments to gather my thoughts as I was not expecting to hear back so quickly… Koa (Benji) was going to be ours just a few days later!

Koa is an amazing boy, who loves to cuddle, play and just be around you. He’s very social, loves meeting anybody and everybody and wants to play with every dog he meets! He’s a beautiful, healthy boy and we couldn’t ask for a better addition to our family!

  • We cannot say enough great things

We cannot say enough great things about Fawn River! Our puppy from there came healthy and happy. He is the most well behaved and loving dog, and was up to date on all his medicals when we received him.

Robin was also so great to work with, being really responsive, flexible on meeting time with us to come pick up our pup, and answering all our questions.

Even after we took Walter home, Robin continues to check in and answer any questions we have as they come up. I can’t recommend Fawn River enough!

  • So confident and loves everyone she meets

We are in love with our newest family member ! We picked up Posey who was formerly known as Azalea 5/7/24. We toured the facility and spent sometime meeting our new pup. Robin was kind and so helpful and made the purchase from out of state so easy! She is our second bernedoodle but our first from Fawn River.

We can’t thank you enough Posey is so confident and loves everyone she meets and we know it’s because of the great start she had from you and your family a world of difference from our other bernedoodle who was scared and very nervous . Posey is so smart and picked up the bell method to go potty outside with in the first few days.

If you are looking for a bernedoodle we would highly recommend Fawn River Doodles!

  • What is the BAB program?

BAB (Badass Breeder) is a program created by Jeanette Forrey to help breeders empower their puppies and give them a voice in what they need. It also makes a big difference in finding the right families for each puppy and the right puppy for each family.

Here’s what Jeanette has to say on why she created her program:

Puppies are raised to believe in themselves and be the best they can be through guiding emotional responses, meeting their innate needs in order, building confidence through intentional and purposeful curriculum and handling that aligns to their sensitive developmental benchmarks, and lastly, evaluating each puppy prior to placement to ensure their voice is heard and they are honored and respected not only with their breeder but with their new human as well.

    Jeanette, founder of Badass Breeders

Here’s summary of a list of benefits for puppies raised on the BAB program.

    Better Stress Handling

When the puppies are a few days old we start with Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS). This improves their stress responses later in life.

    Improved Confidence

Early Scent Introduction (ESI) is also started at a few days old. It is a procedure to help with nose awareness and confidence.

    Puppy/Family Temperament Matching

At 7-8 weeks we do temperament testing. This is a test that helps us place a puppy with the right family, and helps you pick a puppy that will thrive in your home.

  • Why do I want a puppy raised on the BAB program?

This is something we have been working on over the last couple years. It’s not something that happened overnight because it takes a lot of time.

We love our puppies and parents, and we always try to do our very best in raising and training our puppies. The BAB program has helped us so much because it’s a proven, structured approach to raising confident puppies. It has made such a difference in our puppies and how they transition into their new homes.

    Better stress handling

We start when they are a few days old with Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS). This improves their stress responses later in life. We do this is by applying gentle stressors like gently pulling on their tail, rubbing between their toes, gently rubbing a hand over their eyes and face, turning them upside down. We do this all with great care and with much love.

    Improved confidence

We also do Early Scent Introduction (ESI). It is a procedure to help with nose awareness and confidence. It enhances their ability to identify and react to scents. Similar to ENS this is introduced at days 3-16 of a puppies life and is very beneficial to their development.

We introduce the puppies to many new things each week starting at week 4. New toys in the whelping box and exposure to many sounds. When they are older they go outside to the play area to experience even more.

    Puppy/family temperament matching

At 7-8 weeks we do temperament testing, this is a test that helps us place a puppy with the right family and helps you pick a puppy that will thrive in your home. This way everyone gets a voice in the placement process.

All of this takes a lot of time and energy, but the benefits have been so amazing since we have started that it just makes sense to keep doing it all– better placements, fewer problems, and fewer puppies that need to be re-homed.
