Are Goldendoodles always large, fluffy dogs—or can you find one that’s perfectly sized for your space? Here’s what you need to know.
How big do Goldendoodles really get?
As someone who’s bred Goldendoodle puppies for more than 10 years, it’s one of the questions I hear most frequently: “How big will this puppy get?”
That’s a great question, especially if you’re getting ready to surprise someone special with the gift of a puppy.

Different sizes of Goldendoodles
Let’s break down the sizes first. There are generally four size categories when talking about Goldendoodles:
- Micro Mini: Under 20 pounds
- Mini: 20 to 40 pounds
- Medium: 40 to 55 pounds
- Standard: 55 pounds and up
At Fawn River Doodles, I breed Micro Mini, Mini, and what we call “Mini Medium.” The “Mini Medium” category isn’t an official size but refers to litters that can range between Mini and Medium. This usually happens when the parents have a significant size difference, say a 20-pound dad and a 70-pound mom. Puppies from these litters can range anywhere from 30 or 35 pounds up to 55 pounds.
What’s the most popular size?
In my experience, most families are looking for that sweet spot—usually between 35 to 50 pounds. They’re not too large to comfortably fit in apartments or smaller yards, yet still big enough to join in outdoor family activities.

Why don’t I breed standard size anymore?
I used to breed standard-size Goldendoodles, but in recent years, the demand simply isn’t there. It seems like most families today prefer dogs that are more manageable in size and easier to travel with or to keep comfortably indoors.
Caring for your Goldendoodle
Once you’ve selected the right-sized puppy, you’ll need to know how to care for it properly. Here are some quick tips:
- Bathing and grooming: Keep their coat clean and trimmed, especially around the eyes so they can see clearly.
- Brushing regularly: Goldendoodles have adorable coats, but without regular brushing, tangles and mats can become problematic.
- Trimming every 6 to 8 weeks: Regular haircuts will keep your Goldendoodle looking cute and tidy.
- Healthy diet: Foods like Purina Pro Plan, Royal Canin, and even fresh options like Farmer’s Dog are great choices.
- Adequate exercise: They are energetic pups who need plenty of play and exercise each day.

Keeping your Goldendoodle healthy
I recommend a good diet, and depending on your puppy’s needs, probiotics can really help digestion. Products like GI Equalizer by Elite Nutrition and FortiFlora by Purina have done wonders for the pups I’ve raised.
Goldendoodles typically live 12 to 15 years, and proper care will go a long way toward ensuring your new family member stays healthy throughout its lifetime.
Why Goldendoodles make excellent house pets
If you’re thinking of gifting this puppy to your wife, she’s going to love it—Goldendoodles genuinely make amazing house dogs. Here’s why:
- They’re fantastic with kids.
- Playful, friendly, and energetic
- Can easily adapt to your activity level (yes, they’ll happily binge-watch TV with you too!)
- Typically low-shedding or non-shedding depending on their generation and coat type.
Goldendoodles have quickly become one of the most beloved family pets in recent years, and I’m constantly hearing from my customers about how they have “the best dog ever!”
